The Cherokee have lived in Appalachia for thousands of years, hunting the same fields and forest surrounding the lodge. The careful hunter still can bag the occasional arrowhead if you are here when the fields have been tilled.
My family has lived in the mountains of North Carolina since the late 1700 ’ s. We purchased the land over six years ago from the Brown family who had owned the land for over sixty years. We had in mind to protect the land permanently. This we have done and the land is now protected by the Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy. It can never be developed.

Our ground is bordered by the National Forest. There is plentiful game and non-game species including deer, bear, turkey, ruffed grouse, wood peckers, whip-o-will, ducks, geese, red tailed hawks, coopers hawks, broad wing hawks, red shoulder hawks, coo coos, and hundreds more I cannot identify, but intend to one day.
The American chestnut once dominated the Carolina mountains. One in four trees was a chestnut. But since the early 1900,s the chestnut blight, brought in from China, has all but destroyed the species. We have planted hybrid chestnuts on the land in the hope that they will ultimately be able to repopulate the hills again, and in the fall hear the chestnut rains once more.
The North Fork of the French Broad River flows directly from the national forest bounding part of our land. The fishing is seriously bragable. If you don’t catch fish here don’t tell anyone. It won't be good for your reputation. Just go to one of our ponds, pull out a couple of big brookies and lie. Our ponds are spring fed from the mountains and are more pure than mother’s milk. It is with pure spring water you will bath and slake your thirst.
The cabin is a custom built structure reminiscent of the homes the settlers built in the Cades Cove area. It is all wood with the warmth and security so cherished by all who visit. There is one private bed room with a queen bed, and a loft with a queen. With the queen futon in the living room six folks can be very comfortable. There is one bath with a claw foot tub/shower. There is a telephone for local calls, internet, fully equipped kitchen, hot tub, outdoor grill and yes, if you must, Satelite television. Our home has all the flavor of a rustic Appalachian shelter with all the creature comforts our ancestors wanted for.
As a native I have a great pride in my home and I hope it is reflected in the craftsmanship of Hunting Hawk Lodge, the surrounding farm and the joy you find being our guest.
Take a Virtual Tour of Hunting Hawk Lodge and the surrounding land, ponds, river.
